2021.11.29 12:06 Redem0n My thoughts and analysis after reaching my goal of 2k rating on all 3 time controls!
Hello everyone and welcome to another gam-wait.
Hello everyone, I wanted to write out some thoughts after reaching my goal and what a better place to do that, than here!
Some small backstory for me first I guess. I'm 27 years old and I started playing chess again on May 2020 I think it was around the time of the twitch chess boom and Pogchamps 1. In the past, I played chess when I was a kid, from age 6 till 10, after which I completely stopped spending time on chess. Since then I've only played a few games throughout the years, maybe 10 in total, either online or irl.
I'm gonna start with rapid time control, since it was the one that I had to play the least in order to reach my goal.
This's my analytical rapid page and this is a graph taken from the same page for anyone just wanting to take a quick look.
Playing pretty much online chess only, and getting used to fast time controls, rapid was a rough one for me to play. Even just the 10 minute for each player felt slow, which I know sound silly, but I am talking exclusively from my perspective as an online beginner player.
Now on the other hand, I really liked rapid cause I was able to think more about my play, analyzing my games and seeing my mistakes and generally feeling like I'm getting better the more I play. I think last time I played this time control I was limiting myself to one game per day when I could, so I could give each game the attention it deserved.
As far as openings go, I'd say I was playing similar stuff to my blitz games, considering it was what I was comfortable with and knew a few variations. Also, I studied theory for this game mode, since I felt like making a mistake is way less forgiving compared to the faster time controls, where you can pressure your opponent a lot of the times through time even when you'd be losing if you were in a rapid game.
Next one is bullet. This is my bullet page and graph.
Honestly speaking, bullet was hard for me, mainly because I'd go sessions where I'd lose 150 rating, and next session gain it all back. It was really rage inducing, so much that I really contemplated if I wanted to keep on going or stop a lot of times.
I was 95% of the times playing the 1|0 time control. I played some games with the 2|1 one, but it had its own problems, mainly queue time and huge rating discrepancies.
For openings, in this one I played different openings, both as white and as black, in which I could develop faster and having a solid base to go with during the midgame. There'd be a lot of sessions in which I'd watch a GM playing bullet for 30 minutes, and later go play myself and I always felt like it helped me somehow in the sense that I could watch for tricks more accurately than normal.
Also, compared to playing rapid which made me feel like I was getting better over time, in bullet I felt my play getting worse and worse over time. Maybe that's just me though.
My 2 cents for bullet are if you are ever in a 2 loss streak or more, take a 5 min break and come back if you want to play more cause it's only going to get worse. Personally, I took frequent breaks, winning or losing.
Blitz's my favorite time control, since I feel like it is the best of both worlds of rapid and bullet.
This's my blitz page and graph.
Blitz time control is the one I've spent most time at, and I feel like it's the most competitive one for sure. I play 3|0 time control.
About openings that I played throughout the last almost 18 months in blitz, I feel like they varied. I would play specific openings till a certain rating, then feel like I hit a wall, and by learning a new opening and studying theory I'd break it and keep on climbing with this mindset.
For example, I started as an e4 player as white when I first returned to chess, then switched to being a d4 player for a few months and then came back to being an e4 player again. Same with black, I started responding to e4 with some kind of a sicilian, then caro-kann then returned back to the sicilian.
I feel like as a new player you should try out a wide variety of openings and defenses to see what you like and what suits you. Only after experimenting you will see with what you want to stick.
As for analyzing games, I feel like it's less important in blitz compared to rapid games, but it was still important for me for a lot of games in which I missed tactics. Tactics are really important in blitz and being able to spot them and spot them fast will win you a lot of games.
I could probably ramble on and on but I feel like this is a good time to conclude this.
My final thoughts are that I'm glad I came back to chess and started playing again, as it's something I truly enjoy and I do plan to go play otb when things get better!
Thanks for reading so far!
Honorable graph mention
TLDR: chess is a lot of fun, bullet is a nightmare, blitz>rapid if you care about dopamine, rapid>blitz if you care about getting better, check graphs if you want to see my progress!

2021.11.29 12:06 jimmy_derp 1 week brief review Titan Evo 2022 Dark Night edition
The chair arrived in less than a week (Padua, Italy) and the shipping tracking from TNT was accurate and punctual.
The first thing that impressed me was the packaging. All components were accurately protected in foam and divided, nothing was damaged even if the external package had some scratches and a 3cm wide hole in the middle. I mounted it in less than 15 minutes.
The first impact was that the materials were harder than my previus chair (Diablo) and this at first stressed me, but after 1 minute of sitting all memory foam adapted and the chair felt really comfortable. Adjusting all inclinations and the back support the chair fitted me perfectly and now i just occasionaly move the backrest inclination depending on what i'm doing on my desk. After reading all these complaints about a squeking sound from the lumbar support i was a little bit worried, but mine does not make any sound at all. The memory foam cuscion is fantastic and i occasionaly detatch it from the chair to bring it on the sofa during my naps, it's just amazing and i think i'm going to buy something like this but bigger for my bed.
What i really like about this product is the premium feeling of all the components and the detailed and flawless built quality (as you can see from the photos), magnets are really strong and you need only 8 screws to mount the whole chair.
The only little complaint from me is that the lumbar support is a bit rigid but after a few days i got used to it, and the height of the chair should be adjustable in a lower position.
Overhall i love this product and the look of it. It's not a sofa and it's not as soft as most chairs, but the sitting position feels really healthy for my back.

2021.11.29 12:05 Agitation_Akagi Can anyone tell me how this part of the video is done and why it's so fast?
2021.11.29 12:05 wannabe_dev321 Looking for advice and guidance
Looking for some advice/clarity, apologies beforehand for this rant post, just a confused 20yo that's looking for some guidance.
I decided to forgo my freshman year of college back in 2020 because i felt like I wouldn't learn as much from just online classes plus I was still very confused on what I should be majoring in. I spent quite sometime contemplating and decided maybe I should try out CS with a focus on data analytics. After some basic research I began learning Python earlier this year. I've completed Harvard's CS50, Automate the boring stuff, Angela Yu's 100 days of python, on my final project for FCC's Data Analysis with Python and i'm on 100+ day streak on DataCamp's data analysis path.
Last month I had a spurt of confidence and decided test my skills by applying for some "junior python analyst position" and my first technical interview was a hard-level SQL question... yea.. it was crickets... At another interview they asked me if i had experience with excel, I told them not directly but i have used python to manipulate datasets stored in .xlsx and can do basic CRUD operation and the result should be the same and he replied " So you have never worked in excel? majority of our day to day is on excel." and for the roles that used python were more so data scientist position that wanted candidates with deep understanding in statistics and machine learning algorithms.
It seems like the term analyst is very vague and data analyst position are focused on excel and SQL even though the job descriptions states python, maybe they are just using it as a buzzword idk.
Did i waste the past year learning Python and instead should have been focusing on excel and SQL? Should I just go back to college this spring? I feel like my initial vision of what i was pursing is totally different from the reality of the field. I really want to utilize python in my career, maybe its the fact that i put a lot of effort into learning this skill and i don't want it to go to waste. Im open to learning backend dev with python but where should i start? My biggest blessing is I have financial support from my family and I still have a lot of time to decide but im just very confused about my next steps, any advice is appreciated.
tl;dr - I spent a year learning python for data analysis but turns out the industry wants excel and sql, for the python roles they require a deep understanding of ML/statistics which I don't have right now. Should I go back to college to learn this or can I transition to back-end dev? How difficult would this transition be and where do I start?
