2022.01.19 22:56 Suspicious_Sorbet_46 Should I look for another job?

Just got told my job was never needed.
Because our area isn’t doing well with keeping up ours sales and numbers I had a meeting today with one of the higher ups. They basically told me my position was never needed because they were slow anyways. But they still went ahead and gave me advice on how to better do my job making it seem like I still have a spot. I’m only a few months into the new position. Should I be worried? Located in the USA

2022.01.19 22:56 TheCrabFromMoana REALLY QUICK EASY QUESTION I NEED A TIMESTAMP

Hey what’s up guys I will delete this post as soon as I get an answer. My yearbook quote is going to be “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring - Extended Version 24:38” (when Bilbo says I don’t know half of you half as well as I should like…) I was also going to add the timestamp of the theatrical release, but I only own the extended version. So can someone really quick find the timestamp of that quote? Thanks!!!!
Also the reason why I am not just putting the quote is because they only gave us 100 characters. The full quote is 117 characters.

2022.01.19 22:56 ModernMaidofOrleans Thank You

Dr. Peterson, I just saw the Daily Wire report that you left your tenure position at UofT. I'm sure that must have taken an incredible amount of courage, especially for a job that you enjoyed doing. Thank you for being a voice speaking up against the ever worsening corruption of academia and DIE policies that they impose on students and staff. I'm in the dissertation phase of my doctorate and have been experiencing it firsthand also. Your words that being in academe is no longer morally tenable spoke to this nagging feeling in my gut that I've had for the 4 years of my doctoral program. It's hard to give up on academe, though I believe we must, but I hope you are able to continue your important work elsewhere. I want to use Maps of Meaning in my dissertation (if my committee doesn't think you're too "controversial", hmm), so thank you for sharing your knowledge there and on your YouTube/podcast. You help so many people. -AG

2022.01.19 22:56 NoHorse1790 As a potential renter, is it rude to ask multiple landlords many questions?

First time renter here. I am asking this because I got in touch with multiple landlords and asked each of them loads of questions. Even asked a couple for contract drafts. Of course I am going to end up being in agreement with just one of them so i kinda feel bad that i am going to have to call off the deal with all except one. Is this normal or was I rude to take up so much of their time? Is there etiquette for rental searching?

2022.01.19 22:56 search4life7 some thoughts and reflections while being on academic job market

I.posted this to professors, but thought it might be more appropriate here:
I thought it might be helpful to compile some helpful information for those on the job market with my experiences interviewing. In the past year and a half I've applied to about 70 tenure track jobs, had about 25 screening interviews, invited for 8 "on campus" (they were virtual thanks to covid) interviews, chose to attend 5 "on campus" interviews, and received 3 offers. I'm still on the market because I wasn't happy with the offers and have been trying to hold out for something really aligned with what I want. But anyways I thought it might be helpful to provide some random insight on things I've noticed during the interview process, in case its helpful for those on the market for the first time. Obviously this is just my experience, argue with me in the comments if you disagree lol.
**Can you tell how the interview went?**
I have to say that most of the time, I've honestly been able to tell after leaving the interview whether the interview went well or not. When the committee was excited about me and invited me to the on campus interview, during the interview they nodded a lot and most of them smiled a lot. They told me they were impressed with my experiences and CV. Sometimes they even said things like "wow, great answer" (lol so unprofessional IMO but ok thanks). This did happen sometimes for interviews where I wasn't invited to be a finalist, but honestly the energy with the committees where I was a finalist was just positive the entire time. With that being said, there was one time I was invited to an on campus interview when I thought I BOMBED the initial interview. They kept asking me about one specific thing in my field and i was like umm honestly I don't have experience with that. And then they weirdly invited me to be a finalist. But I didn't get an offer from them.
**Thank you emails**
I always wrote thank you emails, more to gauge their reactions than anything lol. And truthfully I found I mostly can't base responses to thank you emails as indicating anything. If they respond to the thank you email, more often than not it is a good sign. But I have had just genuinely nice people respond to my emails even though they didn't invite me to next steps. Most of the time, when I was invited to be a finalist, I did receive some sort of response to my thank you emails. But this is not always true. One of the places I received an offer from, NONE of the committee responded to any of my thank you emails.
**Interview questions**
obviously this ranges field to field, but the two questions I can ALWAYS bank on them asking me, in every single interview, is 1.) what drew you to our college/university and 2.) some sort of equity/ diversity question ("how do you incorporate equity/diversity into your research/teaching?"). Definitely take time to read a little about the college or uni before the interview so you can provide several reasons for that first question. And same for the 2nd question.
**Questions to ask them:**
I like to ask tailored questions that show I did research about the position, but my go to ones are about any college initiatives, the most popular tracks/ majors in the department, how they've adjusted to COVID (lol). Also I read this somewhere and I have found it to be mostly useful to ask "is there anything about my CV/ experiences you'd like me to expand upon" in case theres something they have doubt about, I am then able to clarify. This has worked for me a few times. the other times they were like uh we already asked you all our questions dumbass.
**Things not to do:**
this is more of a funny story than i anticipate anyone actually making this mistake but know the school youre interviewing with haha. At one point I had a bunch of interviews in the same week, two of the interviews w a school that has multiple campuses, each campus VERY different. I got the campuses mixed up and during the interview the interviewee was like are you sure you arent talking about our xxxx campus? and I was like no im sure! then by the end i was like yeah i think you were right. they did not offer me a second interview lolol.
**Random things I have learned**
If the faculty introduce themselves by first name, call them by first name (especially if you are young/just finished your PHD). they are looking for a colleague, you're not s student anymore. I had one awful interview where I felt like they treated me like a student instead of a colleague and I realized one of the reasons was likely me calling them "Dr." after they had introduced themselves otherwise, on top of me looking really young. Theyre looking for a good fit to the team, show them that you can be that and separate yourself from the PhD student you were or in some cases still are.
Maybe this is just my field, but to be quite honest all the interviews I've had with the dean have been very chill, for lack of better word. The deans I've met have always asked the same questions. tell me about yourself, Why this Uni, tell me about your research and how you'll get funding, tell me about your teaching and diversity/inclusion commitment. Every time I have an on campus interview and see the meeting with the Dean next on my schedule I'm like *phew* a nice break, and a nice conversation lol.
get used to rejection, and know that its more about fit than anything else. it doesn't mean you're not good at what you do, it just means what you can offer doesn't necessarily align with what they are looking for.
ALSO I want to mention my field is one where theres actually a need for professors in the field. Its common for people in my fields to receieve fellowships to pursue the study during their PhD because they need PhDs in the field!! I want to say that because I totally understand the privilege I have in being able to turn down several TT jobs. The market for me is NOT the same as the market for many in academia!
